There’s a school of thought that you should distribute your heavier gear along the back or on the top of the pack. What I do is pack my heavier gear in stuff-sack and put it in the bungee cord along the back of the back. I also put some heavier gear in the top inside pocket.

My current bag has some cushy perforated material that is meant to promote airflow over your back. However pretty gutted tonight that after less than 5 months worth of use, the top zipper basically crumbled. Rains website states they have a 2-year warranty so hoping it’s covered under that. I have asked around at a half a dozen shoe/tailor shops and have been quoted at least the cost of a new bag to replace the broken zipper (or told that they couldn’t do it). Osprey Radial , but just felt too similar to the hiking bag I usually use.
